L’opérateur de satellites britannique OneWeb va s’associer à son rival européen Eutelsat dans le cadre d’un accord pour concurrencer Space X d’Elon Musk. La fusion des deux entités permettra à Eutelsat d’émettre 230 millions de nouvelles actions et de les échanger contre toutes les actions restantes de OneWeb. Les actionnaires de OneWeb et d’Eutelsat détiendront respectivement 50 % de la société combinée. L’accord valorise OneWeb à 3,4 milliards de dollars.
Une fois unie, l’entité fusionnée devrait générer environ 1,2 milliard d’euros (1,22 milliard de dollars) de revenus au cours de l’exercice 2022-23. De plus, la société OneWeb a pour ambition de distribuer 648 satellites en orbite terrestre basse. Cette distribution permettra de diffuser le haut débit dans les zones avec un accès Internet limité. Aussi, il compte actuellement 428 satellites en orbite, qui seront désormais associés à la flotte de 36 satellites géostationnaires d’Eutelsat.
Longtemps présenté comme un concurrent de l’énorme projet internet par satellite Starlink Space X de Elon Musk, OneWeb a eu du mal à transformer ses nobles ambitions en un modèle économique viable. La société est sortie de la faillite en 2020 avec l’aide du gouvernement britannique, après avoir dépensée des milliards de dollars en capital-risque. Le gouvernement a versé 500 millions de dollars dans le cadre d’un plan de sauvetage de l’entreprise.
Par ailleurs, la startup a également été impactée par un gel des lancements de fusées depuis la Russie suite à l’invasion de l’Ukraine par Moscou, et a été forcée de se tourner vers SpaceX pour obtenir de l’aide. Cette fusion avec Eutelsat est donc une étape importante dans la poursuite des ambitions de la startup.
